Back in the 1940s and 1950s, motorcycles were not just machines. They were beautiful, practical, comfortable, stylish and full of character. They had proper proportions, flowing lines, deep fenders, big comfortable seats and a sense of romance that a lot of modern bikes seem to have lost.

In this video, we look at that lost era of motorcycle design through the lens of a very special custom Harley-Davidson.

Based on a 2019 Harley-Davidson Street Bob 107, this bike has been transformed to look and feel like a 1948 or 1949 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide. It has been fitted with a full Heritage Classic front end, deep full-coverage fenders, a hinged rear fender, a classic tractor-style solo seat and all the old-school styling cues that make motorcycles feel like proper motorcycles.

But this is not just a video about a custom Harley.
This is a video about what motorcycle design used to be, and what we might have lost along the way. Back then, bikes were not designed to look angry, plastic, overcomplicated or aggressive. They were built to be ridden, looked at, loved and lived with.

The question is, have modern motorcycles lost their way?

As bikes have become faster, sharper and more technical, have they also become less beautiful, less comfortable and less soulful? Have we gained performance but lost taste? Have manufacturers forgotten that motorcycles should stir something before you even start the engine?

This custom Street Bob reminds us of a time when Harley-Davidsons had elegance, road presence and romance. A time when a motorcycle could be practical, comfortable and beautiful all at once.

Is this what motorcycles should still look like?
